Course Objective
Participants in the upper extremity lymphedema certification course will be trained in the four components of CDT and the management of lymphedema affecting the upper extremities. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to distinguish between lymphedema and a variety of other peripheral edemas and understand the medical indications and contraindications of CDT. Graduates will be able to establish a treatment plan for individuals affected by upper extremity lymphedema and perform the treatment accordingly.
Class Topics • Anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system • Pathophysiology of the lymphatic system and lymphedema • Basic techniques of MLD and CDT for the treatment of upper extremity lymphedema • Evaluation and treatment of primary and secondary lymphedema affecting the upper extremities • Lymphedema bandaging techniques for the upper extremity • Decongestive exercises and skin care for upper extremity lymphedema • Measuring techniques for lymphedema (circumferential and volumetric) • Measuring techniques for compression garments • Indications and contraindications for MLD and CDT • Billing for lymphedema management for the upper extremities
Course Format
This 86 hour course is presented in the Academy’s proven accelerated course format, which meticulously blends the optimal mix of Internet-based online home instruction of 30 hours and one-on-one classroom instruction of 56 hours to provide our participants with unparalleled quality of instruction. This format allows participants to become certified in upper extremity lymphedema management in 5½ days. Upon completion of this course, participants will not be able to sit for the National Certification Exam administered by the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA®). The minimum hours necessary to sit for the LANA exam is 135.
