| Wound Management Strategies for Patients with Lymphedema
This intensive 2-day course is sponsored by the Academy of Lymphatic Studies and is designed to further the knowledge of therapists in the management of chronic wounds.
The course covers topics ranging from the anatomy of the circulatory and lymphatic system, physiology of wound healing, modalities of in wound care, wound assessment and documentation to nutritional aspects in wound care.
This specialized approach to wound care takes into account the swellings associated with most wounds and includes techniques of Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy, measurement techniques for compression garments, and much more.
Upon completion of this course, therapists will be able to properly identify wound characteristics consistent with venous insufficiencies in combination with lymphedema, and understand how to effectively apply the different components of MLD/CDT for patients with integumentary dysfunction associated with lymphedema.
This course is open to all therapists who would like to further their education in wound care management.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Recognize the clinical signs and symptoms of lymphedema
2. Appreciate the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic, circulatory and integumentary systems
3. Properly identify wound characteristics consistent with integumentary dysfunction associated with lymphedema
4. Discuss the components of a thorough wound examination specific to patients with lymphedema
5. Discuss wound intervention strategies specific to patients with lymphedema
6. Describe the tests and measures utilized to develop an appropriate plan of care for patients with wounds associated with lymphedema
7. Understand the importance of proper nutrition and hydration for successful wound closure
8. Understand how to apply the components of Complete Decongestive Therapy successfully and safely for patients with integumentary dysfunction associated with lymphedema
9. Identify the proper form of compression therapy to safely manage patients with integumentary dysfunction associated with lymphedema
10. Describe the appropriate modalities and adjunctive therapies to manage wounds associated with lymphatic dysfunction
Instructor
Marina Maduro, PT, WCC, MLD/CDT Instructor Marina received her BA in Physical Therapy in 1988 from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She is a licensed Physical Therapist in Miami, FL and coordinated the lymphedema program department at Kendall Regional Medical Center (KRMC) in Miami, FL. She received her certification as a MLD/CDT therapist from the Academy of Lymphatic Studies in 1996 and has been dedicated to lymphedema and wound care since then. Marina has been certified as a wound specialist by the Natl. Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC) in 2004, and has been coordinating the wound-healing center at KRMC. From 1995-2000 she had lectured about lymphedema in South American countries at different congresses and symposiums of phlebology and lymphology. She has also become an instructor for the American Heart Assoc. for BLS.

Dates and Locations
This course will be held on September 30 - October 1, 2010 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The class hours will be 8:00am until 5:00pm each day. There will be approximately one hour for lunch each day.
Tuition
